I'll be honest. When Keeper's first opened I was somewhere between cynical and apathetic. It opened at a pretty remote corner of a quiet center, and let's face it, it's in Sugar Land. And not even in the Town Square where there's some commercial value either. It placed itself in deep Sugar Land next to Mori Sushi, which, well, nobody goes there. So when I first saw a preview of them by a local magazine, and also some marketing ads, I was surprised they took themselves seriously. It warranted enough of my attention to give them a try.

After coming here, I've come to the conclusion that:

- There aren't enough big time fancy sushi restaurants in Sugar Land. There's Azuma on the Lake and now Keeper's. And no, Taisho doesn't count because they're hibachi-focused.

- Keeper's is serious. They're trying to be the ultimate sushi restaurant in Sugar Land, and guess what? They're succeeding. Let's be honest, would you choose Azuma on the Lake over Keeper's at this point? Exactly.

- They have incredibly cute waitresses. There is not one bad looker out of the bunch. If they made a Houston Sushi Restaurant Swimsuit Calendar, I would put in some order the following waitresses of: RA, Toku, Kaneyama, Sage 400, Uptown, Zake, Keepers (and if they ever come back to prominance again, Cafe 101).

- Keeper's is pretty darn commercial, meaning it's not real Japanese. They have cute little made-up rolls with wacky names. If you can accept this, then you'll have no problem with it. Sushi snobs will have a fit. Keeper's is the epitome of the bastardization of marketable sushi to the masses.

- Keeper is a very nice guy.

- They have cool bathrooms. There's even a comfy white lounge chair you can sit on for...? Talking on the phone? Waiting for your friend to finish peeing? I dunno. It's cool though.

- Try this cotton candy martini by a bartender named Tia. I don't know what she calls it, but you'll never see cotton candy the same way again. One of the better bartenders I've met.

- Sushi's okay, but they are creative. Keeper and his assistant have very strong imagination when it comes to creating specials. I wouldn't even bother with the regular menu, take whatever specials are there because it's in the specials that they feel inspired.

- Keeper's is expensive. But it's sushi. If you want to save money, go to Old Place Cafe across the street.

- It's only worth it if you're in Sugar Land. It's the best "big time" sushi place in that area. Azuma on the Lake has the better scenary, but Keeper's is overall better for food. But anywhere else? Keeper's won't stand out. Every part of town has a restaurant at Keeper's level. Don't drive all the way here if you live in, say, the Woodlands or Pearland.

I work in Sugar Land and my friends are here, so I'll frequent Keeper's occasionally. Not only will they make it, but I think they'll be bigger as time goes on. They're already getting packed on the weekends, but I'm not sure if Sugar Land is a "happy hour" sort of place. And if there was, they'd flock to the Town Square where the Flying Saucer, Blu, Baker's St and Charhouse is. And we all know how commercialized sushi restaurants like Keeper's depend on the happy hour business to survive. So it'll be interesting to see. If Azuma on the Lake gets knocked out, Keeper's will be raking in the sushi business in Sugar Land.
