I go to Kobecue in binges.

The first of my binges happened early last year and it consisted on understanding what it was. Clearly it was not a real Korean restaurant, but I couldn't shake the disbelief that it was fast food Korean in the mold of McDonald's either. It was odd and it was very original at the same time. I never knew bibimbop could be served like a McChicken Sandwich. I didn't understand how Korean BBQ could be put into taco tortilla. This idea was clearly going to explode back in their face or it'll take off. Still, my curiousity got the best of me and I decided to keep it safe during my first wave and had the spicy pork bibimbap. Despite the idea of fast food being entrenched into my mind, I would even say that the bibimbap could hold its own against some of the serious Korean restaurants in Long Point. Perhaps I was biased. Not only was I hungry both times, but also secretly cheered for them to succeed. A hip crusade to educate the Houston masses on Korean classics? I didn't want them to fail.

My second Kobecue binge came months later, when it was long erased from my memory. I was around the area for something and saw Kobecue again. Knowing it was fast food, I went there to get a 15 minute meal. This time, it was in the mid-afternoon and the place was empty. I asked the guy at the counter to recommend me something new. Something different. He mumbled a few descriptions, but my mind had already been made on the so-called Fusion Tacos. Which exact one I had, I've forgotten at this point, but it was a very guilty pleasure. Was it healthy? No. Was it sputtering grease everywhere? Yes. Did I, a 27 year old woman, care I was devouring it instead of eating it like a lady? No. The taste buds had taken over. And I loved the taco. I left with a satisfied smirk.

A week later, I dragged my friend (now boyfriend) here and used it as an excuse to satisfy another Kobecue binge, my third one. I wanted to come, but didn't want to come alone feeling like a loser. He came kicking and screaming, because he wasn't really into Korean food. By this time they had the new Korean Burger and he loved it, although I'm not sure if it's really because it was a burger or he had a new found appreciation for Korean cooking. Probably the former. I tried a rice bowl. The rice bowl was what did it for me. It turned me into a fan of Kobecue. It alleviated the fear I had in me which was ashamed that I liked baby steps Korean food.

My latest binge came right after the new year started on a semi-busy weeknight. I ordered to go. By this point I had a good understanding of what Kobecue is. It was a portal to the Korean culture which had been hidden from the rest of Houston for so long. It was not real Korean food, but a My First Korean Restaurant start-up kit for those who aren't Korean and, most likely, aren't Asian. It's fusion elements made it easier for the masses to identify -- putting bibimbap in a hamburger, for example, or BBQ pork into a taco. There is a Kobecue Kids menu. There is the complimentary, all-you-can-eat kimchi station. Kobecue has made me proud...proud that for once Korean culture was opened up to so many new people.

Would this bold experiment work? I believe it will. :)
