...my only beef is with the service. Not feeling it. I was making excuses for them in the beginning, how they might be understaffed, but I did the math and even though there was a full house, they had the right amount of servers...

I knew a guy who knew a guy who knew a girl that used to work here. That's a fourth-hand source. I come here on a regular basis...that's a first hand source. Both of us have very differing opinions about Bon Ga, and I think to paint a clear picture it's probably best if each side is revealed.

My Opinion:
Everyone complains about the service here. They have to understand that there's bell on the side of the wall to ring. That's why they're all booths...the bell is a big part of Korean restaurant culture. You're not supposed to sit there and wait to be served. This is simply a culture difference. It is impolite for a server to ask you if everything is okay...you ring the bell. I promise that if you ring that bell, they will come promptly to you every time. The people who usually complain aren't Koreans and they don't know this. I'm very happy with their food. It's delicious, they're a perfect combination of flavors. The guys who cook here know real Korean cooking and it's as close to actual Korea in Houston as you'll ever get. Take this from someone who goes to Korea ever summer. They serve the best kimchi chi gae here, which is my favorite thing in the world. I'm also very pleased with their BBQ...it's far better prepared than Seoul Garden's. The BBQs are in the private rooms in the side of the restaurant. Prices are a bit high, but not to the point you go crazy. Trust me, people exaggerate about the prices being too high for Bon Ga. The manager guy is very nice too. He's got a great attitude about him and I've always found him easy to talk to. Worth the trip to come here.

Her Opinion (paraphrased by me):
The cook doesn't know what he's doing and never has. To be honest, I wanted to tell him this to his face when I was there, but even my sisters and mother know not to prepare galbi, ban chans, bibimbaps and soondubus like that. They don't even serve fish cake anymore, which is stupid because that was what the customers always wanted. I've always insisted that they shouldn't be so cheap, because they'll win them back with the fish cakes. I just don't understand their thinking. A lot of the staff also did not like anyone who wasn't Korean. They constantly didn't tip very well, but worse, they just didn't know what to do. The owner wanted it to be a Korean restaurant for Koreans and he expressed some displeasure with the increasing amount of un-Korean people who were coming here. But that wasn't why we had a "bad attitude". We never really had a "bad-attitude" at all! If anything a lot of them had bad attitudes, even some of the Korean ones! My reaction was a reflection of their reaction. Nothing more. I did not enjoy working at Ban Ga, and I'm usually a happy person. I haven't really got anything too good to say about them. They not only raised their prices, but also lowered their portions. This is how you show appreciation to the people who made Bon Ga what it is? By increasing the prices? I am not agreeable to that.

So between mine (A+) and hers (D-), I'll turn in a B-. I think that's fair.
