...these Kaneyama waitresses know how to bat an eyelash...and maybe that's good enough to get a 30 percent tip on most customers. For those of us who are immune to being charmed by looks, however, our server standards are based on, well, getting served...

Back in my hometown of San Diego, it was common that the best foods were found in areas that nobody would think to visit. These restaurants were often located in the most questionable places in town that you would think twice about. Here in Houston, I find that to be of comparison as I have found this hidden gem that made my visit completely worth the try, and I'm glad I didn't think twice!

Located off Westheimer between S. Gessner and Westerland Dr., this restaurant is in a shopping center that is definitely hidden alright! Behind those wooden brown doors, you're greeted by a host or hostess that seats you and your party accordingly. I find it kind of ironic that of all the times I've visited, I have always been seated in the same far corner booths near the entrance or next to the sushi bar. I actually like this arrangement and each time I have visited, I have never been let down. Perhaps each visit was meant to be, which is how I see it.

Their restaurant definitely has a big capacity as I tend to see many families of all ethnicities frequent this place during lunch and dinner. The servers are very cordial and some of them are seen dressed in kimonos which I have not seen anywhere else. Upon each visit, I have taken advantage of their happy hour, which falls between 4-7 PM. Their warm house sake is definitely one I tend to order along with edamame. All rolls are 20% off during that time and, may I add, they also have a kids menu with plenty of choices served with your choice of one side item, soft drink and sweet orange slices.

Of their sushi and new rolls, I have become a fan of their Yokohama and Golden Treasure rolls. One sushi I tend to order before anything else is their yellowtail, spicy tuna roll and their Dynamite roll. All have their own distinct flavors and textures that melt in your mouth. There are others that are just as good; however, I tend to order the same ones from time-to-time as those I have mentioned are usually my favorites from here.

As for their entrees, I have tried their salmon teriyaki combination bento served with miso soup, house salad, vegetable tempura, seaweed salad and choice of steamed of fried rice. Very flavorful, I shall add! Their ramen is also good. However, after having Sasaki's ramen, I'd have to say it just doesn't compare. I love my ramen piping hot, but the one time I had it here, the flavor was mild to my liking and just plain warm. Perhaps I will give their ramen another try. However, I am most settled with Sasaki's instead, no offense. Their chicken katsu entree is also good. Although, I haven't quite gotten use to their katsu sauce as it is unlike the ones I'm usually accustomed to. This is what sets them a part from everyone else's.

Overall, the atmosphere is quaint and the food is good and also of reasonable prices. If you know what you want and are craving a particular flavor, you will not be disappointed as you get what you pay for here. Do not be intimidated by its surroundings because once you walk in, you'll feel at ease. Come visit this hidden gem!
